Melodic Mastery: An Emmy Nominated, Philadelphia Songbird’s Journey from "The Voice" to Solo Stardom
Julian King, Artist Appreciation
Philadelphia has a reputation for producing some truly phenomenal singers, like Teddy Pendergrass, Billie Holiday, Pattie LaBelle, Boyz II Men, The Roots, Jill Scott, and Jazmine Sullivan. Now, there's a new name to add to that list: Mr. Julian King.
Interestingly enough, Julian is a graduate of Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, the same high school Quest Love, Black Thought, Boyz II Men, and Jazmine Sullivan also attended. During his matriculation at the University of Arts, also in Philadelphia, he joined Grammy U and the Recording Academy-Philadelphia Chapter, where he could network most aggressively in the music industry and developed integral connections that would be of benefit throughout his career. It is safe to say, that Julian, has been a student of his gift, for a long time and thus has continued to show and improve in his writing and performance abilities.
Today, there's a bit of worry that R&B music isn't what it used to be. In quality and volume. With his wide range of talent, Julian's just the artist to bring that spark. He's got what it takes to fill the gap that's been missing where the great male R&B singers used to stand.
Leap to March 2024, Julian just dropped his latest track ‘Hoodie,’ teaming up with Ashton Mallory on vocals. It's got this nostalgic 90s R&B vibe, that many RnB fans miss and love. Even cooler, it received a shoutout on Ebro’s segment "Discovered ON" on Apple Music. My personal favorites in his catalog, which are somewhat new to me, but not to long-time fans include ‘Homeless Heart’, ‘24 Hours’, ‘Always You (Acoustic Version)’, and ‘Safe.’
Julian's also gearing up to perform at The Roots 2024 Festival in his own stomping grounds of Fairmont Park, sharing the stage with big names like Jill Scott, Lil Wayne, and Nas- A full circle moment, for a Philadelphia native.
An artist's greatest duty is to pour their heart and soul into their craft, sharing every bit of their talent freely with the world to uplift and inspire.
It's rare to find an artist who uses their gifts to the fullest like this, because many artists stick to their comfort zone, tirelessly honing their skills along a single path. But Julius is different.
He channels every ounce of his God-given mental and vocal talents, relentlessly writing, singing, improving, inspiring, and starting the cycle anew. Julius embodies both a mentor and a perpetual learner, an up-and-coming talent as well as a proven success.
It's a unique sight, to witness an artist so fully tapped into their potential, guiding fresh talent, enlightening kids, and scaling his artistic endeavors. He's a mentor and a student of his craft, all at once. His path now can only rise higher, and I'm eager to witness him reap the rewards that his Queer, African American, and Asian Ancestors have in store for him.
Julian doesn't just sing music; it lives deep inside him. He breathes melodies, with his thoughts and voice acting as his tools of expression. It's heartwarming to see him finally receive the applause his talent merits. Julian is next to soar solo, joining the ranks of successful Songwriters like Ne-Yo, Frank Ocean, Bruno Mars, Muni Long, and Victoria Monet. I'm excited about what's on the horizon for this remarkable individual and hope to have a conversation with him soon!

Is it tough juggling teaching, songwriting, and your solo music career?
A lot of artists don’t switch up their surroundings to make art, so what did you discover about yourself and your music while creating in China? Would you consider moving somewhere else for a fresh burst of inspiration in the future?
How did you feel when you were informed that you would be performing at The Roots festival back home in Philly? What was your initial reaction and your family's reaction when you shared the news, and are they coming to cheer you on?
How rewarding is it, after performing on “The Voice” and being a backing vocalist for Monica and Syleena Johnson, to now be recognized on your own as a solo artist?
Now, after dropping the new track ‘Hoodie,’ should your fans get ready for a whole album soon?
As a biracial artist, your sound clearly shows the influence of African American singers. But are you thinking of mixing in some Asian-style sounds, particularly with how popular the international music scene is becoming?
Besides The Roots picnic, where are you planning to hit the stage this summer and fall? Will you be doing more Pride festivals or some cozy solo gigs?
